Doctoral Program Support Schemes
Tokyo Metropolitan University offers a variety of scholarships for students entering its Doctoral Program. And TMU’s Department of Physics provides an environment that allows students entering the Doctoral Program to concentrate on their research. The following provides a general overview.
Scholarship programs of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)
- JSPS Research Fellowship (Doctoral Program, research stipend)
Several fellows are selected each year - The Tobitate! (Leap for Tomorrow) Young Ambassador Program
Scholarship programs of Tokyo Metropolitan University
- Graduate School Research Scholarship (Doctoral Program, scholarship)
Selected from students who were not selected for a JSPS Fellowship. Scholarship of 150,000 yen per month. - Graduate School Support Scholarship (Doctoral Program, scholarship)
University-wide program. Pays about half of academic fees. - Attendance in Graduate School of Science Academic Conferences (Participation in international conferences)
Students highlight their research when preparing the application. 1st-year students in Master’s Program may also apply. - Support Program for Attendance in International Graduate School Academic Conferences (Doctoral Program, participation international conferences)
A scheme of TMU’s International Center. Helps pay travel costs associated with attendance in international conferences. - Financial Support Program for Students Sent Abroad (overseas study)
For students doing research at an overseas research institution for a period of at least 3 months but less than 6 months. 1st-year students in Master’s Program may also apply.
Employment support program of the Department of Physics
- Department of Physics RA (Doctoral Program)
An independent program offered by the Department of Physics. Pays about half of academic fees by hiring students as research assistants.
Master’s Program students can also receive financial assistance by providing educational assistance to undergraduate students through TMU’s teaching assistant (TA) scheme. Additionally, there are schemes that exempt or partially exempt students’ responsibilities relating to Japan Student Services Organization scholarships (please inquire with JASSO about them), which also helps create an environment conducive for research.
